Could the risk of contamination be inflated?

Posted in Growing by the mole | 23 July 09

Whilst contamination could be a serious issue in some places (and see the blog entry on contamination advice) it seems that contamination may not be as prevalent as some people may think.

Click to read today's article about this issue in The Evening Standard:
Are there no-go areas for veg?

  1. As you suggest it depends where you are and how land has previously been used. In some urban/post industrial areas contamination can be quite widespread and severe - and even in less urban/industrialised areas you can find nasty pockets. Always check historical land use maps (usually held in a public library archive) and beware foundries, glassworks, and other dirty industries.

There ARE no go areas, and we found a few in our search for suitable sites in the Black Country, however sometimes with clever zoning and moving materials around on the site you can place the problem out of reach of the veg growing areas. Beware even some allotments, we found one that was a toxic waste dump with underground fires burning!!
