  • Pinch out side shoots, puts the enrgy back into the fruit production rather than shoot production.

  • have been very successful with gardeners choice tomatoes, first time, and the instructions always say pinch out the side shoots, so have been experimenting with different leaves to pinch out, the instructions also say when there are 4 sets of tomatoes start pinching out top leaves as apparently they shouldn't grow too tall. all very interesting. good luck.

  • Glad to help. I went to school in Beckenham about 50 years ago. We're in Aberdeenshire now and have bush tomatoes cropping outside. Don't go overboard with the pruning and you're bound to get a crop down there in the tropics.

  • Hello, many thanks for your response much appreciated. I am afraid I do not know the variety as they were a present to the lady who owns the land and planted by her, although I can try and find out although i doubt she was advised at the time.

I have supported the plants with canes as you suggested and i will look to see if I can can cut the foliage a little.

I am based in Beckenham South London

  • Sounds like you have Bush Tomatoes, sometimes called determinate, rather than the tall indeterminate types often grown in greenhouses with cane or other support.

    Do you know the variety?

Bush types dont need any pruning but many are very sprawling and untidy so some support is useful. I've found that you can thin out some foliage without harm and I feel this improves airflow through the plant, cutting down on disease risk.
    Where are you located?
