  • Grafting is remarkably easy. Collect scions of all your favourite apple varieties and use your unknown tree as rootstock. Make sure all your grafts are easy to reach and treat each as an individual tree amidst the new family tree. The best time to collect scion wood is January when it is fully dormant .Remember to label each one with variety.Store these in a plastic bag with some wet paper at 4C in the veg basket of your fridge until late February or early March .Use a brand new Stanley blade sterilized in meths between each cut. Use the rest of winter to practice grafting hard wood twigs. There are many useful videos on youtube and instuctables.com.

  • Hi,

All you need to do is decide when your tree flowers, tell the nursery when that is and get one that flowers at the same time or overlaps.
Chances are that the tree is Diploid but there is an outside chance that it may be Triploid and might need a third pollinator. If it's a worry then ask for two trees of differing variety. Try and get trees that overlap and flower/fruit in succession.

    Best,

  • Hi if you grow from seed like this the results can and will be very random, well done for trying though! if the tree you've grown isnt self pollinating and from the sounds of it, it isnt, look for an apple tree that flowers at the same time.

This is the main consideration when looking for a partner tree.

    good luck
